Sunday in Venice (Part 1)

Finally, the last day of Venice! I am having a hard time choosing photos, so this will be a two part post. If you make it through both, well, you have a lot of patience!

On Sunday, we woke up and packed our baggage up. We took our showers and all that, and then headed out for another nice (but rainy) day. Our first mission was to find the spiral staircase that we knew was nearby. We found it!

Here is the staircase. It is called the Palazzo Contarini dal Bovolo (bovolo means snail shell). It used to be a palace, but now there is a museum. We didn’t go in, but we definitely admired the outside.

We then walked around a little before heading out to a different island. This photo is of me in a random square, but isn’t that a cool archway behind me?

We also came across a dead end that was covered, and it had a nice view of a canal.

Aaron and I at that location. I rigged the camera with the gorilla tripod onto a door handle (with the timer on of course). Yeah, I am an engineer.

Next was a trip out to San Giorgio. Here is a picture of the island with the famous gondolas. We didn’t take a ride this time, but we did the last time.

We visited the church which had some great paintings and a wonderful carved choir. Then we went outside and took some pictures. Surprising, right?

Here is a shot of San Marco and Palazzo Ducale.

Aaron took this cool picture of the seagull after it had taken a drink. I did do a little straightening and all that, but it is a really nice shot.

The bridge of sighs. This was with the 50-200mm lens (zoom baby).

We took the vapretto back to the main island because I wanted to wander over to the Arsenale because I liked the looks of it. Here is Aaron in front of it. It has been used since 1104 for military purposes. It looks like you can enter with a boat, but they had a chain across to prevent boats from entering. They lowered it while we were there.

Me on the bridge in front of the Arsenale.

We stopped and had some lunch (gnocchi for me and seppia pasta for Aaron - he can tell you about that though). After that we wandered back to get our bags from the B&B.

This is Aaron on the way back. You can see they had a little carnival set up. Yeah, no one was riding the rides or playing the games.

This is a picture of one of the canals while we were wandering to and from the B&B.

I thought this was a cool bridge. It is a funny picture because if you look closely you can see the no pictures sign on the bridge. Hahaha…yeah right!

We headed back to Piazza San Marco to see the festivities again. That is where I’ll continue. You are in luck though. I should be able to do it quickly tomorrow…that’ll be one off the list!

Cool. Lots of stuff we didn't see when we were there - especially the spiral staircase and the Arsenale.

I don't understand how you can have a "no pictures" sign on a bridge that is in public view. I'm glad you took the picture anyways. Is that guy pointing at you? He's probably saying, "You must pay to take photo of my bridge. You Americans think you can you whatever you want..."

Venice is one of the coolest and most unique cities that I have ever been to. I felt that way when I was there visiting. Now, looking at these pictures, they bring great memory back. Thanks for taking and posting pictures.

Yeah, I really like Venice, too. This was my 4th visit. Aaron and I said that they should move the Rome office up to Venice :)

The spiral staircase is really hard to find, but the arsenale is easy to see if you look down the right canal. It is off the main street (first time I saw it - 1 out of 4 isn't bad).

He was probably yelling at me, but I didn't see the sign until AFTER the photo. I would have taken it anyway...don't tell!

Hey! Do you have any idea what I had to go through to get that seagull photo and nobody commented on it? I nearly had to wrestle with another camera toting dude to get the shot not to mention the fact I was kneeling in mud puddles. Sheesh, no love to be found around here... :)
