Well, not really day 1, but close enough. Aaron and I flew from Rome to Munich on Thursday, February 21. Our flight was at 9pm (or close to that - whatever that Condor flight is) and arrived at 10:30ish pm. We took the S-Bahn (part of the Munich subway/train network) to Unterschleissheim where we stayed at the Alter Wirt. It is a great restaurant, and one of our friends told us that they had a nice hotel. It was nice!
Aaron went to pick up his brother, Matt, from the airport from his 6:30 am flight. Yeah, I stayed in bed. Aaron got up a little late, but made it to the airport around 6:35. Matt already was through customs and had his luggage. They were early!
We all got cleaned up and took the 25 minute S-Bahn ride into the city. We walked around a little before getting Aaron his weisswurst (white breakfast sausage).
Aaron and Matt in Karlsplatz in the center. There is a square here and then this gate. Beyond the gate is a nice pedestrian street that is all shops.
Aaron and Matt with a fish in front of some sort of wildlife museum. No, we didn't go in :)
Next we got weisswurst because it is Aaron's favorite. This is a picture of his plate. Yes, he took this picture. He wanted to remember his weisswurst, sweet mustard, pretzel and beer. I think this is Aaron's favorite meal.
Me pulling the skin off my weisswurst. The fork and knife combination wasn't working well, so I used my hands. Oh well :)
After our brunch (yes, you eat weisswurst before noon), we went the Frauenkirche (big church). This is a picture of the inside.
It was close to noon by this time, so we decided to make Matt go to Marienplatz to watch the Glockenspiel (it rings at 11 am and noon). Here are Aaron and Matt waiting. Aaron was strong while Matt was sleeping (yes, he got off the plane and then we went walking).
This is a picture of the Glockenspiel at the Neues Rahaus. When it rings, the bells play a song and the characters move around and tell a story. Sounds cool, right? Actually, it is quite underwhelming. The bells ring horribly off key, and you are packed in the square with a ton of other tourists watching this thing move. I took video to make sure I remembered that I didn't want to watch it again...hahaha!
Next we walked through the Viktualienmarkt (a market near Marienplatz) because Aaron had never actually been there when everything was open. There are all kinds of different stores (meat, cheese, bread, etc.). Here is Aaron coming out of the cheese store. He loved it, but I think it just smelled bad.
The beer garden in the market with the shops in the background.
We bought some cheese and then some pickles. The boys decided to get pickles marinated in hot peppers. They were so freaking hot...I couldn't even finish mine! The flavor was great though! This is a picture of the three of us in front of the maypole with our pickles in the Viktualienmarkt.
Next we made Matt climb to the top of the tower of St. Peter's Kirche (church) after we visited the inside. This is a picture of the Frauenkirche and Marienplatz. It is a pretty cool site to see.
This is a better photo of Marienplatz.
Aaron and I at the top of the tower.
Next we went to the English Garden. On the way, Aaron found another bunch of flowers that he liked (he pointed them out about one million times). Here he is doing his pointing.
These are the flowers...ok...they are pretty cool.
We happened to walk by the section of the river that has the standing wave. Guys surf in this wave. We watched for a while. Here are a couple of photos of them surfing.
This is a video of the surfing...my first video post so let me know how it works.
Our last stop was the Chinese Turm. I wanted to walk by there, and this was the only photo I took there. Oh well....I got a photo, right?
After we headed back to the Alter Wirt for dinner and our cozy beds. A busy first day :) Gotta do the march when someone arrives from the USA!
That's the first day. On to the next day! Ciao ciao!

I see you've taken Matt on the death march. Matt, we know how you feel and congratulate you on your survival. We didn't realize you guys went to Munich first. Cool pictures, especially the one of Aaron and Matt in front of the wild boar. The breakfast...well, it's different...beer, pretzel, and heart clogging sausage in the morning...really? I like Cheerios and soy milk. I know, I'm real cultured...
The surfing was pretty cool. Who woulda thought surfing...in a river...cool! The video was a nice touch.
Ask Lena what she bought over the weekend.
